As environmental issues increasingly appear on everybody’s
agenda we have started to consider what steps we can take to support our environment.
Quality of product and service has always been our key priority, however we are
always on the lookout for different methods and resources to protect the environment. In recent years we have altered a number of our activities to reduce
our environmental impact.
Here are some of the measures we have taken:
·Reduced use of Fungicides and Pesticides.
·Increased use of natural products such as
bacteria and nematodes.
·Collecting rainwater from our greenhouses and polytunnel
for watering plants.
·Leaving land to nature.
Since we have looked to minimise our use of Fungicides and
Pesticides we have noticed an increase in the number of frogs and toads that
call our Polytunnel and shade houses home. In turn they help us to keep down
the number of unwanted pests such as slugs!
For some years now we have kept an area of land at the back
of our nursery as an area for wildlife. We call it our ‘Grassfield’, although
it comprises both grass, reed and wooded areas. For
many years the land was used for the grazing of working horses, at a
time when our business was predominantly bulb growing. We believe it
was once used as a source of clay, the furrows of
the clay pits can still be seen. Today the area provides a home for all
sorts
of wildlife including Long-eared Owls, Reed Warblers, Snipe and deer.
